Let Them Eat Art

Let Them Eat Art is Maplewood’s largest event. It is a celebration of Bastille Day, but really just a reason to have an enormous street party filled with great art and food. The name is a take-off of Marie Antoinette’s famous line, “Let Them Eat Cake.” Instead of cake, the City of Maplewood offers art.

Not only is it in our home town, it is out our front door. The street is closed for several blocks and the party ensues. It is an absolute blast.

In 2008, Studio X was asked to design a poster for the event. Up until that point, all the posters were one-offs, random illustrations. The design created became the logo for the event, which treated it more as a branding assignment than an art poster.

Each year, the event has increased in size. The brand stuck, and several years later it is still being used.







Branding and Identity

Good branding becomes the visual and intellectual stamp of a company or organization. It becomes the fabric that says, “this is who we are.” It’s more than just a mark. It becomes a signature. Studio X has helped many companies, large and small, create an image, look and feel for themselves. Sometimes it is a visual facelift; sometimes it is an entire redirection of focus.

South Grand

The South Grand Community Improvement District needed a site that could speak to who they are, the richness of the surrounding area, as well as highlight businesses and events in their district. In addition to designing and developing the site, most of the photography and event branding on the site was created by Studio X. View South Grand’s site.


The Salvation Army – Midland Division

The Salvation Army – Midland Division had an outdated site on a obsolete platform. We created a User Experience study and stratified content based on what we discover. When Studio X created the new site, it opened a floodgate of information that no one had previously expected. The site went from a few pages to over 100, and gave them the opportunity to inform people in ways they had never had before. Visit The Salvation Army–Midland Division’s site.

Second Wind St. Louis

The Second Wind Lung Transplant Association of St. Louis helps people who undergo lung transplantation with non-medical expenses. It is not uncommon for those who go through the operation successfully, to be plagued by huge financial, logistic and personal problems – both to them and their families. Second Wind is a small, but effective group within the transplant community that has helped many transplant recipients.

Second Wind needed rebranding, photography and a site to convey what they do for their clients, was well as to help with their fundraising aims. Please visit Second Wind online to learn more.


Maplewood Coffee Crawl

Maplewood hosts several cooperative business events throughout the year. Most of these events are dependent not only on community participation, but strong business involvement as well.

The Maplewood Coffee Crawl started as a way to show off the various restaurants and cafés that feature coffee in some fashion. Participants go from business to business tasting their coffee or coffee-related products. Each year, the Coffee Crawl has become a larger event. Most recently, in addition to ads and tickets, Studio X designed t-shirts that were given to the first 300 people who signed up for it.

The Coffee Crawl sold out and continues to be one of Maplewood’s favorite events.


United Provisions

United Provisions is a grocery store with a small footprint in the heart of Loop. Since they are owned by Global Foods of Kirkwood, Missouri, they have access to a vast array of foods from around the world. In essence, they have cherry-picked the best of what Global Foods offers and represented it in a much more urban-savvy environment.

Studio X was asked to work with them on their branding, signage, and create a few small ads, as well as a simple website. Below are a few examples of our work for them.
